Ústavní Soud (Constitutional Court), Brno

The Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic (Ústavní Soud České Republiky) is the supreme constitutional authority in the Czech Republic, holding the position of the highest and most powerful court in the country. Established under the Czech Constitution, it is charged with the protection of constitutional order and is the most specifically defined judicial body in the nation. The Court's primary role is to review and rule on matters of constitutionality and constitutional law, serving both as a court of first instance and appellate jurisdiction in such cases. It also uniquely handles impeachment proceedings against the President of the Czech Republic, brought forth by the Parliament.

Although the current Constitutional Court was established in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, its origins trace back to the 1920 Constitution of Czechoslovakia. This earlier version made Czechoslovakia the first country in the world to provide for a system of judicial review by a specialized court, a concept later adopted by many other nations.

The Court is housed in the monumental building of the Moravian Provincial Chamber (Provincial Estates House) in Brno, a magnificent structure built between 1875 and 1878, designed by Viennese architects Anton Hefft and Robert Raschka. This building, influenced by the Northern Italian Renaissance, is one of Brno's most splendid landmarks. Since 2014, the building has been undergoing extensive reconstruction to restore its original grandeur while accommodating the modern needs of the Court.

Visitors to the Constitutional Court can tour the Assembly (Plenary) Hall and the meeting room where the Court's rulings are publicly announced, offering a glimpse into the institution's elegant and historic environment.
