Mercado del Leo (Lion Market), Girona

Nestled in the heart of Girona, the Lion Market (Mercat del Lleó) stands as a living testament to the city's centuries‑old traditions of trade and community. Its roots trace back to the medieval weekly market that flourished just outside the city walls, in an area that would eventually evolve into the vibrant Mercadal neighborhood. From those early beginnings, the market grew steadily. By the 18th century, a bustling daily food market had moved to what was then called Plaça de les Cols (today Rambla de la Llibertat), where butchers, fishmongers, and farmers sold their wares under official supervision.

The modern incarnation of Lion Market emerged in the mid‑20th century. Construction began in 1941 on a new municipal supply market, and the elegantly designed building-spanning around 1,700 square meters-was officially inaugurated on November 3, 1944, with doors opening to the public on November 15. It was the work of architects Juan Gordillo and Ricardo Giralt, and featured stalls allocated by municipal concession to merchants offering a wide array of fresh products.

Today, visitors will find a colourful mix of stalls selling fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and seafood sourced from the surrounding Catalan countryside and Mediterranean coast. Local farmers and artisans set up side by side with long-established vendors, creating a space where seasonal fruits share the spotlight with regional specialties such as fuet, embutidos, and artisanal cheeses. The scent of freshly baked bread mingles with the aroma of spices and cured meats, while shoppers exchange greetings in a friendly, bustling environment.

For travellers, the market offers both a culinary and cultural discovery. Exploring its aisles provides an authentic glimpse into Girona’s daily rhythm, with opportunities to taste, browse, and connect with the people who help keep the city’s traditions alive. It’s an engaging stop that complements the city’s historic sites, revealing another layer of Girona’s character through the flavours, aromas, and conversations of the Lion Market.

Let’s do a visualization exercise: Girona’s medieval quarter, with its stone staircases and cloistered courtyards, suddenly posing as Westeros. Between 2011 and 2019, HBO’s Game of Thrones roamed Europe in search of backdrops, and Girona ticked all the boxes-Romanesque towers, Gothic facades, and narrow alleys that looked like they’d been waiting centuries for a camera crew. The city...  view more

Girona Introduction Walking Tour

Girona sits in northeastern Catalonia, where every cobblestone seems to gossip about old allegiances and bitter defeats. Long before tourist maps and cafe terraces, Iberian tribes pitched up here in the 6th century BC. The Romans soon followed, stamping the place with the name Gerunda-“near the river”-a practical nod to the Onyar River, which still slices the city neatly into old and new.
