Military Aviation Museum, Virginia Beach
The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest collections of flying warbirds in the world. The collection includes aircraft from Germany, France, Italy, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, covering both World War I and World War II. The planes range from the 1910s to the early 1950s.
Founded by Gerald "Jerry" Yagen in 2005, the museum opened its hangars to the public in 2008. Yagen began collecting and restoring warbirds in the mid-1990s, starting with a Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk.
The museum focuses on preserving and restoring these aircraft. They also hold live demonstrations with airshows twice a year. Visitors can explore a reference library and various artifacts that provide historical context for the aircraft.
The Military Aviation Museum is located at its own private grass airfield, the Virginia Beach Airport, in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach. The complex includes two display hangars, a replica World War I wooden hangar, a maintenance hangar modeled after a 1937 design, a restored pre-WWII Luftwaffe metal hangar, and three storage hangars painted to look like British WWII hangars.
Additionally, the complex has a large, orange and white checked water tower and a dinosaur park at the entrance, which is free and open to the public.
