Millen House, Bloomington

Millen House, Bloomington

The Millen House stands as a historic landmark on the campus of Indiana University. Constructed in 1845 by William Moffett Millen, an early farmer in the area, it is revered as one of the city's oldest residences and a prime example of Greek Revival style architecture. Named after two large raintrees that once adorned its grounds, the house reflects the prosperity and sophistication of its builder, showcasing the transition from simpler vernacular structures to more refined architectural styles prevalent in the mid-nineteenth century.

This Georgian-style brick house, with distinct Greek Revival influences, replaced the original log cabin on the property and served as a testament to Millen's growing prosperity. Constructed primarily from bricks produced in his own kiln, the Millen House boasts a sturdy two-story design resting on a limestone foundation.

The interior features load-bearing brick walls and wooden framing, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Despite its symmetrical layout and minimal ornate details, such as Doric pillars on the front porch, the house exudes a timeless charm and historical significance that underscores its status as a cherished architectural gem in Bloomington's landscape.
