Mogren Fortress, Budva
Mogren Fortress is a ruined structure built in 1860 by the Austrian Empire. It was originally named Fort Jaz and served as a barracks and military base. The fortress was designed in a rectangular shape with high walls and towers at each corner, standing 110 meters above the beach. From the site, you can see Budva's Old Town, Sveti Nikola Island, and Jaz Beach across the sea.
After the fall of Austria-Hungary, the fortress came under the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and was renamed Mogren Fortress, after the nearby Mogren Cape. During World War II, it was used as a storage site for weapons and ammunition, and some of the era's bunkers remain visible today. The fortress fell into disrepair after the war and was further damaged in the 1979 Montenegro Earthquake.
In 2015, there was a proposal to restore the fortress, adding facilities like an auditorium, exhibition hall, café, and parking, but concerns about the impact on the site's authenticity led to the project's rejection by the Budva Municipal Assembly. In 2016, as part of the Budva 2020 initiative, vegetation was cleared, and basic facilities like a parking lot and information center were added.
The fortress is now a viewpoint over the Budva Riviera. It's located in a Special Natural Area and is part of a Category III Natural Monument, offering views of notable spots like Pržno Beach, Petrovac Bay, and Valdanos Bay near Ulcinj.
