Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Newark

Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Newark

Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark is a historic rural cemetery located in the city's North Ward, specifically in the Broadway neighborhood along the west bank of the Passaic River. Occupying around 40 acres, it was designed by Horace Baldwin and opened in 1844. Notably, it has been a resting place for some of Newark's most distinguished citizens, including political, industrial, and cultural figures such as John Fairfield Dryden, founder of Prudential Financial, and Seth Boyden, the inventor of patent leather.

The cemetery, known for its Victorian Gothic gates designed by Thomas Stent in 1877, combines architectural beauty with historical significance. These gates, built from local brownstone, were restored in 2005 with funds from the New Jersey Historic Trust. Mount Pleasant is listed on the New Jersey Register (since 1987) and the National Register of Historic Places (since 1988).

Beyond its architectural features, Mount Pleasant Cemetery holds graves that date back to the mid-17th century, some of which were relocated here as Newark developed and required more space. The site is meticulously planned and includes winding roads named after various trees and flowers, reflecting a Victorian dedication to nature. The diverse trees—ranging from tall evergreens to sycamores and maples—add a serene, shaded ambiance to this historic enclave.

The cemetery is also known for its remarkable funeral sculptures and mausoleums, displaying a range of styles from Romanesque to Art Deco. These artistic elements, along with intricately designed grave markers, reflect the creativity and spirit of Newark's past residents, making it a significant cultural and historical site in New Jersey.
