Museo Internacional del Barroco, Puebla
Museo Internacional del Barroco is a Baroque art museum designed by Japanese architect Toyō Itō. It was inaugurated on February 4, 2016.
The creation of this museum corresponds to the desire to strengthen the cultural offer of the city of Puebla, to strengthen its tourist attractiveness, while being part of the history of this city. The city was founded in 1531, by and for the Spaniards and has an old city, a maze of historic buildings, including the first library in the Americas dating from 1646, and many churches in the Latin American Baroque style, including the Church of Santo Domingo, in the Mexican Baroque style, whose main chapel, the Capilla del Rosario is covered with gilding.
The most striking characteristic of the museum is its structure and its exterior and interior appearance, composed of simple, curved shapes in white concrete. Toyo Ito's conceptual style has, however, been judged by some commentators as far removed from the ostentatious vocabulary of the Baroque. The museum has an area of 18,000 m2. A patio, embellished with a fountain, offers visitors a relaxation area in the center of the building.
