Museo Taller Litografico (Lithographic Workshop Museum), Cadiz

The Lithographic Workshop Museum is a rare gem for lovers of printing history and graphic arts, showcasing one of Spain’s most significant collections of 19th-century lithography. Opened in 2010, the museum traces its origins to the German lithographic press established in the city in 1861, which operated until the late 20th century. Cádiz was notably the third Spanish city-after Madrid and Barcelona-to adopt lithographic printing, having imported its first press from France in 1820.

The museum houses over a thousand lithographic stones sourced from the Bavarian quarries, many of which are displayed as works of art in their own right..

Moreover, the collection includes an impressive array of tools and machinery such as pantographs, guillotines, design tables, and an 1850 manual press from Paris-one of the few still in working condition today. Visitors can explore original prints, press trials, and even a massive lithographic stone weighing over 300 kilograms.

More than just a static display, the museum also honors the legacy of lithographers like Jorge Wasserman and Nicolaus Müller, notable as being promoters of technical innovation in the 19th century.

Cádiz isn’t just old-it’s mythologically old. Some say Hercules himself founded the city after his tenth labor, fresh from slaying a three-headed monster and stealing a herd of red cattle. Others-less into mythology, more into maritime records-say it was the Phoenicians who rolled up in black ships around 1100 BC and named it Gadir, meaning “walled stronghold.” Either way, it’s been...  view more

“Cádiz is a silver cup, surrounded by walls and kissed by the sea.” The saying isn’t just poetry-it’s urban planning. For over 3,000 years, this port city has been circling itself with stone, preparing for whoever might come sailing over the horizon. And given Cádiz’s enviable position and wealth, plenty of enemies did.

Nicknamed “the silver cup” for the way its peninsula juts into the Atlantic, Cádiz sparkles as one of Spain’s oldest coastal gems. The Old Town is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed façades, and balconies that seem to compete over who can grow the brightest gardens. Add in centuries of Moorish, Baroque, and Neoclassical influence, and you’ve got a city that wears its history in layers...  view more
