Muzeul Locomotivelor cu Abur (Museum of Steam Locomotives), Sibiu
The Museum of Steam Locomotives was inaugurated on August 23, 1994. The effort to collect the most significant steam locomotives from the Romanian railway network began in 1991. Today, the museum showcases over 30 steam locomotives, ploughs, and steam cranes that operated on Romanian railways more than a century ago.
The exhibits, built between 1885 and 1959, come from various factories, including Domeniilor Reşiţa, 23 August, and Malaxa in Romania, as well as Schwartzkopff, Orenstein & Koppel, and Borsig in Berlin, Mavag in Budapest, Skoda, and other manufacturers from Austria, Sweden, and the USA.
The collection features both broad-gauge and narrow-gauge locomotives, the latter of which includes those used on funicular railways that traversed mountainous regions. Two of the locomotives are still functional and are occasionally put into use. On December 31, 2000, these locomotives were designated as treasury patrimony by order of the Minister of Culture, granting them legal protection.
