Muzeul de Istorie a Farmaciei (Museum of the History of Pharmacy), Sibiu
The museum opened in 1972 and boasts a collection of over 6,600 pieces from the 16th to the 19th centuries. These artifacts were sourced from 67 places, including pharmacies, medical offices, institutions, and private individuals across 32 localities in the country. The museum is housed in a historic building in the Small Market, which is an architectural monument featuring Gothic and Renaissance elements dating back to 1568. One of the oldest pharmacies in the region, "La Ursul Negru," once operated here.
The museum is divided into three sections: the office, the laboratory, and a homeopathic exhibit containing 2,900 items. The first room, the office, replicates the traditional setup of a pharmacy, showcasing medicinal products. Its furniture, crafted in Vienna in 1902, originally belonged to the "La Vulturul Negru" pharmacy. Notable among the artifacts in this room is a bronze mortar from 1597, used in the initial stages of medicine preparation, making it the oldest item in the collection.
A narrow corridor leads to the second room, which displays medical instruments, surgical kits, scissors, microscopes, and illustrations from historical documents and publications. The section dedicated to the pharmaceutical laboratory highlights the intricate processes involved in medicine development and their evolution in line with medical and pharmaceutical advancements. On display are various balances, mortars, crushers, grinders, filters, distillers, metal and ceramic containers, and laboratory glassware.
The third and final room is devoted to homeopathy, a practice that gained significant popularity here, with its proponent, Samuel von Hahnemann, working as a secretary to Baron Samuel von Brukenthal for over a year. The homeopathic collection includes over 2,900 items, such as kits and bottles from the old "La Îngerul" pharmacy. This room also features documentary materials on pharmaceutical activities, including the first edition of the Romanian Pharmacopoeia, published in Bucharest in 1862.
