National Museum of Ghana, Accra

The National Museum of Ghana was established on March 5, 1957, as part of Ghana's independence festivities. Its inauguration was graced by the Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina, with A.W. Lawrence serving as its inaugural Director.

Within its walls, a diverse array of artifacts spanning archaeology, ethnography, and fine art are showcased. The archaeology section offers a chronological journey from the Stone Age to recent historical epochs.

Meanwhile, the ethnography gallery houses a rich assortment of indigenous Ghanaian artifacts including chief's regalia, traditional musical instruments, gold weights, beads, textiles, stools, and pottery.

Additionally, it boasts items from other African nations obtained through exchange programs, such as Senufo masks from Ivory Coast, Zulu wooden figures from Southern Africa, ancient Ife bronze heads from Nigeria, and Bushongo carvings from the Congo.

The art gallery, though compact, impresses with its collection of contemporary Ghanaian paintings rendered in various mediums including oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and collages. Complementing these are sculptures crafted from diverse materials.
