Gallery 1957, Accra

Founded by Marwan Zakhem on Ghana Independence Day in 2016, Gallery 1957 has since grown to encompass three gallery spaces in Accra. Its mission is to foster global connections between contemporary West African art and the wider world. In October 2020, Gallery 1957 expanded its reach with a London location, providing another platform for showcasing artists from Africa and the diaspora.

Gallery 1957 curates exhibitions, installations, and performances featuring prominent regional artists, bridging local and international audiences. In addition to its diverse roster of artists and exhibitions, the gallery facilitates international exchanges through partnerships and an artist residency program, encouraging engagement with Ghana's vibrant contemporary art scene.

Beyond its physical spaces, Gallery 1957 engages the public through fairs, talks, off-site projects, and site-specific installations. It also contributes to cultural initiatives through publications like books and catalogues. In 2021, the gallery launched the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, dedicated to women artists in Africa, reinforcing its dedication to supporting emerging and established talent in Ghana and beyond.
