Natural History Museum, Muscat
The Natural History Museum of Oman, located in Muscat's Ministry of Heritage and Culture complex in Al Khuwair, plays a vital role in preserving the country's diverse natural heritage. Established on December 20, 1985, the museum provides visitors with a detailed exploration of Oman's rich flora and fauna, including indigenous mammals, insects, birds, and a botanical garden.
One of the museum's notable exhibits is the whale hall, featuring the skeleton of a sperm whale that washed ashore in Oman in 1986, showcasing the marvels of marine life. The museum also houses an extensive collection of marine and animal fossils, including ancient mammals like monkeys and elephants, as well as stuffed animals such as the Arabian leopard, caracal, and Arabian oryx.
In January 2014, plans were announced for a new, larger museum premises, spanning three floors and covering 5,000 square meters. The new building offers immersive experiences on marine and terrestrial environments, as well as exhibits on the solar system and space. It also serves as an educational and research center, with lecture halls, temporary exhibitions, and scientific sections dedicated to research and archival work.
Through its displays, educational programs, and commitment to conservation, the Natural History Museum of Oman reflects the Sultanate's dedication to preserving its natural heritage for future generations.
