Newman Wine Vaults, St. John`s
The Newman Wine Vaults are a fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into the rich stories and traditions surrounding wine aging, piracy, and the region's liquor trade. These two impressive vaulted cellars, constructed with brick and stone, are considered among the last remaining of their kind, making them an important piece of Newfoundland's heritage.
One of the notable tales associated with the Newman Wine Vaults dates back to the 17th century. During this time, a Portuguese ship carrying precious cargo of port wine destined for London was ambushed by pirates. In an attempt to evade capture, the ship was forced off-course and found itself in the Atlantic. Seeking refuge, the vessel made an unexpected stop in St. John's and remained docked for the duration of the winter.
To protect the wine from harsh weather conditions, the cargo was stored in nearby caves, which happened to be in close proximity to the Newman and Company establishment. As spring arrived and the ship finally reached its intended destination, it was discovered that the extended period of aging in the caves had significantly improved the taste and quality of the port wine. This accidental aging process marked the beginning of Newman and Company's practice of aging their wine in these very cellars.
From that point until 1966, Newman and Company utilized the vaulted cellars for the aging of their wine. The historic significance of these cellars lies not only in their architectural features but also in their association with Newfoundland's liquor trade. Today, visitors to the Newman Wine Vaults can explore informative displays that chronicle the region's colorful history surrounding the production and trade of alcoholic beverages.
