Ninfa del Cántaro (Nymph with the Pitcher), Malaga

The Nymph with the Pitcher (Ninfa del Cantaro), affectionately nicknamed La Muneca by locals, is a bronze statue and fountain in the Neo-Plateresque style, located in Malaga’s Park. This artistic and historical landmark was a gift to the city in 1877 by industrialist Tomas Trigueros y Trigueros. Initially placed near Trigueros’ foundry in the Perchel neighborhood, it was relocated to the park in 1922 as part of a municipal beautification initiative.

Crafted by the French A. Durenne Foundry, the fountain features a graceful nymph standing atop an octagonal basin adorned with Sevillian tiles bearing plant motifs. The nymph, dressed in a Roman-style tunic, pours water from a jug she holds with both hands, symbolizing the springs that nourish the earth. The pedestal, a combination of rockery and tiles, was designed by Daniel Rubio Sanchez, adding a naturalistic touch with mosses and maidenhair ferns thriving amidst the water streams.

Positioned in a small gazebo on the park’s south side, the fountain remains a cherished symbol of Malaga’s cultural and artistic heritage. Interestingly, an identical version of the statue painted black known as La Negrita, can be found in Antequera, further highlighting its connection to the A. Durenne Foundry.
