Nobska Point Lighthouse, Falmouth

Nobska Point Lighthouse, Falmouth (must see)

Nobska Light, also known as Nobska Point Light, is an iconic lighthouse situated at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod. Overlooking Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, and Vineyard Sound, this historic beacon offers breathtaking views of Martha’s Vineyard and Nonamesset Island.

First established in 1828, the original light was mounted atop the keeper's house. In 1876, the current 42-foot iron tower replaced the earlier structure, making it a lasting symbol of maritime history in the region. In recognition of its significance, Nobska Point Light Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The light station consists of four main buildings: the lighthouse tower, the keeper's house, a radio beacon house, and a small oil house. The tower itself is an architectural marvel, with a brick interior and a metal exterior made of four rings of iron paneling. It features Italianate-style sash windows on its lower levels and four porthole windows near the top. A ten-sided lantern house crowns the tower, complete with an iron balcony offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding waters. The adjacent keeper's house, built in stages between 1876 and 1905, is a Cape-style wood-frame structure designed to accommodate both a keeper and an assistant.

Nobska Light stands as a testament to the region’s rich maritime heritage and the evolving needs of navigation. Today, it remains a beloved landmark, drawing visitors who admire its historical significance and picturesque setting. I
