Old Lighthouse, Beirut

Old Lighthouse, Beirut

The Old Lighthouse in Beirut stands as a historical monument with a rich narrative spanning over a century. Located in the Al Manara district, this iconic structure was originally built in 1835 and has undergone several modifications since. Known locally as the Manara, the lighthouse has become synonymous with the district itself, a name which translates to "Lighthouse" in Arabic.

This octagonal tower reaches a height of 25 meters (82 feet) and features a distinctive design with white and black parallel bands. It includes a lantern and a circular observation room, which have historically served to guide maritime traffic in and out of Beirut's bustling ports. The Old Lighthouse was a pivotal beacon during the 19th century when Beirut emerged as a crucial maritime crossroad and economic hub in the region.

Despite its inactivity since 2003, the Old Lighthouse remains a poignant tourist attraction. The story of the lighthouse is deeply intertwined with the local community, particularly a family that has maintained it for 150 years, passing down the responsibility through generations. This family's dedication was highlighted in a short film by Nay Aoun, where the current operator reminisces about his childhood at the Manara, emphasizing the lighthouse's emotional and historical significance to him and the community.

Today, while the Old Lighthouse may no longer serve its original navigational purpose, it remains a testament to the resilience and perseverance of those who have cared for it. It stands not only as a significant landmark in Beirut but also as a cherished piece of the city's maritime heritage and familial legacy.
