Oleatrium Museum, Kusadasi

Oleatrium Museum is a captivating destination for those intrigued by the cultural and culinary legacy of olives. Founded by retired English teachers Hasan and Gürsel Tonbul, this private museum emerged from thirty years of dedicated collecting and research. Since its opening in 2011, Oleatrium has become the largest of its kind globally, showcasing the evolution of olive cultivation and olive oil production across millennia.

The museum experience unfolds within a thoughtfully designed complex that includes exterior and interior gardens, a welcoming lobby crafted to resemble an olive oil factory, and eleven distinct exhibition halls arranged chronologically-from the Archaic period through the Industrial era and beyond. Rustic and sustainable building materials-locally sourced stone, brick, and wood-reinforce the museum’s commitment to eco-conscious urban museology.

Upon arrival, visitors embark on a time-traveling journey through olive oil's storied past. Each hall is packed with artifacts and dioramas revealing ancient pressing tools, Roman-era cosmetic oils, Byzantine relics, and early industrial machinery-accompanied by narrative displays that illustrate how olive oil shaped civilization, economy, and gastronomy through the ages.
