Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Portland
The Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial is an outdoor place of remembrance set within Hoyt Arboretum. Inspired by the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial dedicated in Washington, D.C., in 1982, it was created through donations, volunteer work, and the efforts of veterans and their families. Designed by the landscape architecture firm Walker Macy, the memorial opened on Veterans Day in 1987.
A gently curving path, approximately 1,200 feet long, guides visitors through the landscaped site. Black granite walls display the names of Oregon service members who died during the Vietnam War or remain missing in action. The inscriptions also place events from the war beside news and milestones from Oregon, showing what was happening at home during the same period.
Maple trees, lawns, stone surfaces, and dense greenery create a quiet setting for reflection. The Garden of Solace includes a fountain and other water features that represent life, death, and renewal. Benches and open areas provide space for private remembrance, while annual ceremonies bring together veterans, relatives, and members of the wider community.
