Outpost Gallery, Norwich
OUTPOST Gallery, based in Norwich, is a dynamic artist-run charity dedicated to the bold and uncompromising presentation of contemporary art. Founded in 2004 by a group of seven artists and makers, OUTPOST has established itself as a leading center for artistic activity in the East of England. The gallery operates on an innovative and democratic model inspired by Glasgow’s Transmission Gallery, ensuring continuous evolution through a rotating Steering Committee of up to eight voluntary members, each serving for no more than two years.
OUTPOST hosts five annual exhibitions showcasing contemporary artists, alongside offsite projects, events, and artist editions. Its inclusive membership offers residencies, exhibitions, and exclusive events. The organization also runs OUTPOST Studios in Norwich, supporting over 80 artists with affordable workspaces since 2010. Through its Core Programme for emerging artists and Creative Programme for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds (supported by Arts Council England), OUTPOST promotes inclusivity and tackles poverty in the arts.
OUTPOST’s roots trace back to EASTinternational, a major annual exhibition in Norwich (1991–2009), with curator Lynda Morris directing its funding to help establish the gallery. Its name honors Norwich's former artist-led space, Frontier, continuing a legacy of artist-driven initiatives. OUTPOST’s democratic model fosters artistic experimentation and professional development, with over 50 individuals gaining experience through its Steering Committee.
OUTPOST’s model has inspired artist-run spaces like Generator (Dundee), Embassy (Edinburgh), Catalyst Arts (Belfast), and 126 Gallery (Galway), cementing its role as a blueprint for artist-led initiatives. With affordable studios, inclusivity, and contemporary art exhibitions, OUTPOST remains a key force in Norwich’s cultural scene and beyond.
