Piazza della Liberta (Freedom Square), Salerno
Freedom Square stands as one of Salerno’s most recent large-scale urban spaces, designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill as part of a broader redevelopment of the waterfront. The square is closely tied to the adjacent Salerno Crescent, a semicircular complex that frames the northern edge of the space. Covering roughly 28,000 square meters and set slightly above sea level, the square combines a curved section facing the Crescent with a triangular extension opening toward the sea.
As you enter the square and face the Crescent, notice how the buildings are arranged in a continuous arc. The paving beneath your feet shifts in pattern and material, combining green “Guatemala” marble, lava stone from Mount Etna, granite, and travertine. Walk toward the triangular area, facing south and southeast, keeping the Crescent behind you. At the far end, you will reach the elevated “diamond”, where a shallow body of water reflects the sky.
From here, look down along the edges of the triangle: on your right, a set of stairs leads toward the promenade running alongside the Port of Santa Teresa, extending westward; on your left, another set of steps descends toward the beach, where the shoreline opens out along the coast.
