Place Thessalie (Thessaly Square), Montpellier

Located within the Antigone district of Montpellier, Thessaly Square (Place de Thessalie) is a prime example of modern urban design with neoclassical influences. The square, along with the nearby Europe Square (Place de l’Europe) and The Golden Number Plaza (Place du Nombre d’Or), forms a trio of iconic public spaces conceived by the renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. The architecture surrounding Thessaly Square draws inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity, with residential buildings that feature imposing columns, symmetrical facades, and classical motifs.

At the heart of Thessaly Square stands its defining feature-the Fountain of the Ephebes, created by artist Cristian Breazu. The fountain, set in a circular pool measuring 16 meters in diameter, features three statues of ephebes, or young men, showering under streams of water. This homage to ancient Greek culture not only adds a sense of history to the modern square but also serves as a tranquil spot for visitors and locals alike.

The square itself is a quiet and sunny retreat, ideal for sitting on one of its many benches and soaking in the atmosphere. Children often play around the fountain, while adults relax with a book or enjoy a leisurely conversation. The combination of classical architecture and contemporary urban planning makes Thessaly Square a unique destination for those exploring Montpellier’s Antigone district, whether on foot or by bike.
