Podmaine Monastery, Budva

Podmaine Monastery, Budva

The Serbian Orthodox Podmaine Monastery was built in the 15th century by the Crnojević noble family. The monastery consists of two churches: the smaller and older Church of the Presentation of the Mother of God, constructed in the 15th century, and the larger Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, built in 1747.

The name Podmaine (Pod-Maine) means "beneath Maine." Maine was a small tribe whose territory lay below Lovćen, between the Stanjevići Monastery and Budva. The monastery served as a gathering place for the tribe, where they traditionally held meetings on Saint George's feast day.

Metropolitan Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš passed away at Podmaine Monastery in 1735. He was initially buried there, but his remains were later moved to Cetinje. The writer Dositej Obradović also spent several months at the monastery during his visit to Boka in 1764.

In 1830, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, at the request of the Russian emperor, sold Podmaine Monastery and Stanjevići Monastery, along with their estates, to the Austrian Empire.

The frescoes in the Church of Saint Paraskeva were painted in 1747 by Rafail Dimitrijević from Risan and Nicholaos Aspioti from Corfu. The monastery was burned down in 1869, and it sustained significant damage in the 1979 earthquake.

It was completely rebuilt in 2002, and new frescoes were painted in the smaller church. Among these frescoes, one titled "Sinful Bishops and Emperors" is said to depict a former Yugoslav leader, Tito, and heads of the uncanonical Montenegrin Orthodox Church being condemned to hell in a modern reinterpretation of the Last Judgment.
