Pont Gueydon (Gueydon Bridge), Fort-de-France
Gueydon Bridge is a historic pedestrian bridge crossing the Canal Levassor in the city center. The bridge is linked to the Gueydon Fountain and the water-supply works initiated in the mid-19th century under Admiral Louis-Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse Gueydon, then governor of Martinique. The canal and its crossings were constructed to channel fresh water into the city at a time when Fort-de-France was expanding and facing sanitation and public health challenges.
The bridge remains situated near historic streets and public spaces, alongside the fountain and remnants of the canal system that once played a central role in the city’s infrastructure.
