Postamt (Post Office), Bregenz
The Postamt near the lake was built in the late 19th and early 20th century, when postal services were expanding across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Railways and steamships sped up travel around Lake Constance, and letters, parcels, and telegrams linked the town with Vienna, Germany, and Switzerland. The building reflected the empire’s aim to present communication as stable and reliable.
Architecturally, it is classified as Neo-Renaissance, a style often used for official buildings of that time. The façade is symmetrical, with tall windows, solid stone walls, and simple classical details. It was designed by Friedrich Setz, who created more than 25 major post offices across the empire, and it even has a near “twin” in Bad Ischl, reflecting the standardized design of that era.
As of 2026, it still functions as a branch of Österreichische Post AG. Telegram desks and handwritten records have been replaced by digital systems, but it still handles mail, parcels, and financial services through Bank99. It stands in the lakeside Lower Town (Unterstadt), below the medieval Upper Town (Oberstadt).
