Posttheater, Arnhem
The Posttheater is a flat-floor theater housed within the KAB building, once the headquarters of the Catholic Labor Movement 'St Joseph.' This theater complex comprises various rooms, including the Theater Hall, which can accommodate between 148 to 319 seats thanks to its telescopic stand, and the Media Room, with a maximum capacity of 90 seats.
The name "Posttheater" harks back to its humble beginnings in 1991 when it originated in the former post office on Driekoningenstraat. Initially intended as a rehearsal space for the Gelderland youth theater platform, it evolved gradually into a full-fledged theater. The transition to a cabaret stage began in the mid-1990s when comedian Mark van de Veerdonk sought a venue for a try-out performance.
With growing demand, the original premises became too small by the late 1990s. In 2000, the Posttheater found a new home behind Arnhem Velperpoort station within the historic KAB building, formerly renowned for hosting bird exhibitions, weddings, and exams. The merger of the KAB foundation and Posttheater foundation led to the establishment of the KAB Posttheater, colloquially known as Het Posttheater. The transformation into a professional theater with three halls, attracting around 35,000 visitors annually, was a self-supported endeavor with limited resources. The official inauguration of the KAB Posttheater took place on March 19, 2001.
The Posttheater primarily focuses on cabaret, hosting renowned figures like Youp van 't Hek, Theo Maassen, and Guido Weijers, while also providing a platform for emerging talent. Notably, it has gained recognition for its involvement in television series like "The Llamas" and "The Alpacas."
