Praia do Tunel (Tunnel Beach), Albufeira

Tunnel Beach-also known as Peneco Beach (Praia do Peneco)-is one of Albufeira’s most emblematic beaches, positioned at the western edge of the old town along Portugal’s southern Algarve coast. Its popular nickname, Tunnel Beach, comes from the 20-meter tunnel carved through golden cliffs, linking the heart of Albufeira to the sea. Once through the passage, visitors are welcomed by a wide stretch of soft golden sand, framed by sandstone formations and crowned by the distinctive rock known as “Peneco.” This central location makes the beach not only easy to reach but also a favorite for both sun-seekers and casual strollers.

At roughly a kilometer long, Tunnel Beach is the largest of four adjoining beaches along Albufeira’s waterfront. Although it can get busy in the summer, its generous size means there’s usually space to relax. The beach is especially photogenic at sunset, with whitewashed buildings perched atop ochre cliffs and sweeping Atlantic views below. From the promenade, a short walk west brings visitors to the Xorino Grotto, a sea cave linked to Moorish legends from the 13th century.

Modern amenities add to the convenience. A clifftop elevator, ramps, and stairs make access easy for all, including those with limited mobility. During the high season, the beach is supervised by lifeguards, and visitors can rent parasols, loungers, and pedal boats. The water is clean and clear, though it deepens quickly-something to keep in mind for younger swimmers.

Nearby, cafés, restaurants, and beach bars ensure no one goes hungry or thirsty. Whether for a quick visit or a full day in the sun, Tunnel Beach balances natural charm with urban ease.

Why You Should Visit:
Busy beach with many activities going on both on the (clean) sand and in the (crystal clear) water. The waves are good and the water gets deep quickly.

Tip:
Beach chairs are available for rent, but plenty of extra space if you just want to lay down a blanket.
However, there aren't any places to rent watersport equipment here – you'd have to walk a very short distance down to Praia do Pescadores instead.
