Praia Grande (Big Beach), Sintra
Praia Grande, translating to "Big Beach," lives up to its name as the largest stretch of sand in the Sintra-Cascais coastline. This picturesque beach is nestled within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, offering over 2 kilometers of golden sand framed by high cliffs. Its relatively sheltered southern end, combined with multiple peaks and ideal swell conditions, has made it a haven for surfers and bodyboarders, hosting various European and world championship events.
At the northern end of the beach, visitors will find one of the largest outdoor saltwater swimming pools in Europe. Spanning an impressive 100 meters in length, the pool is part of the Arribas Sintra Hotel. Open to both hotel guests and the public (for a fee), this pool offers a family-friendly space with separate shallow areas for children and diving boards for adults. The ocean-view pool remains a popular alternative when the Atlantic waves are too strong.
Praia Grande is not just a modern retreat; it also boasts a prehistoric allure. The southern cliffs are home to fossilized dinosaur footprints, including a sequence of 11 steps visible at low tide. These imprints, dating back 100-170 million years, were left by both carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs. Access to these fossils is restricted for educational and scientific purposes, but the site provides a fascinating glimpse into Earth’s ancient history.
Beyond its natural beauty and sporting appeal, Praia Grande is a favorite summer destination for residents of Lisbon and Sintra. Easily accessible by tram via the EN375 road, the beach attracts a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. Facilities such as cafés, restaurants, bars, parking, and public restrooms ensure a comfortable visit.

Sintra Introduction Walking Tour
Traces of humanity in Sintra date back to Paleolithic times. At an open air site near the church of Sao Pedro de Canaferrim and the Moorish Castle there were found ceramics from 5,000 BC. The name Sintra is indo-European. It means "bright star" or "sun." Romans called the place "sacred mountain." Ptolemy called it "mountains of the moon."
