Prince of Wales Armouries, Edmonton

Prince of Wales Armouries, Edmonton

The Prince of Wales Armouries is a striking early twentieth-century brick and sandstone structure located just north of downtown Edmonton. Completed in 1915 and originally known as the Edmonton Drill Hall, this two-story rectangular building was designed by noted Canadian architect E.C. Hopkins. Its fortress-like appearance-with crenelated corner towers and a solid, commanding presence-reflects the preferred architectural style for military buildings in Canada during that era.

Constructed on a 0.96-hectare parcel, the armory served as a major military training site for the Department of National Defence until 1977. It played a vital role during both World Wars, housing regiments such as the 51st Battalion, the 233rd French-Canadian Battalion, the 49th Regiment, the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers, and what would later become the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. The site also accommodated corps units including signalmen and medical personnel. In 1921, the building was renamed the Prince of Wales Armoury to reflect its evolving role within the military.

After military use ended, ownership of the building was transferred to the City of Edmonton in 1982. It soon became home to various community organizations, including the Cadets and the Edmonton Food Bank. Following a thoughtful renovation process, the historic site was repurposed to house the City of Edmonton Archives-maintaining its strong connection to the past while serving a new civic function.

Today, the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre stands as one of Alberta’s most significant early armory buildings. Beyond its historical and architectural importance, it is now also a cherished venue for public and private events. Its expansive lawn, elegant brick façade, and atmospheric interiors make it a popular location for everything from weddings and corporate retreats to tradeshows and community gatherings.

With over a century of service to the city and country, the Prince of Wales Armouries remains a proud symbol of Edmonton’s military heritage and architectural legacy.
