Protestant Cay, Christiansted (must see)

Protestant Cay is a small offshore islet reached by a short ferry ride across the harbor. Its compact size, sandy shoreline and calm water make it easy to explore during a relaxed half-day visit. The beach is the main attraction, with shallow areas suitable for swimming and clear views toward the historic waterfront and boats moving through the harbor.

The cay also has an unusual history connected with religion and burial customs. According to local tradition, during the period of French Catholic rule from 1650 to 1696, Protestants and people of other faiths were not allowed to be buried on the main island and were instead interred here. This history is believed to have given the cay its present name.

Military history also forms part of the site. During Danish rule, Fort Sophia Frederika was constructed on the eastern end in the 1780s to help monitor harbor activity and discourage smuggling. Although little remains of the fort today, its former position reflects the cay’s strategic location near an important colonial port. The island is also associated with the St. Croix ground lizard, a native reptile found in only a limited number of places.

Today, much of the cay is occupied by Hotel on the Cay, while the beach remains accessible to visitors. Beach chairs and cabanas are available for rent, and nearby facilities provide food and drinks. Snorkeling is possible around parts of the shoreline, where visitors may encounter small tropical fish, conch and starfish. Beach activities, harbor views and colonial history add variety to the small island.
