Pumping Station, Falmouth

Pumping Station, Falmouth

The Falmouth Pumping Station, located on Pumping Station Road in Falmouth, is a historically significant waterworks facility that has served the community since the late 19th century. Constructed in 1898 in response to increased demand for vacation properties and fire suppression, the complex continues to operate as an essential component of the town’s water supply infrastructure. Recognizing its historical and architectural significance, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The main pumphouse is a three-section masonry structure, measuring approximately 150 by 60 feet (46 meters × 18 meters). The central section, designed by Ernest N. Boyden-a Massachusetts architect known for his expertise in waterworks-was completed in 1898 and originally housed a steam engine, boiler room, and pump. This section features a hip roof crowned by a bell-cast cupola, segmented-arch windows, and a prominent round-arched main entrance with double doors, showcasing Boyden’s Queen Anne architectural influence.

The eastern section of the pumphouse, added in 1903 as an engineer's dwelling, follows Boyden’s original design specifications. It is notable for its porch supported by large fieldstone piers. The westernmost section, a newer pump building, was added in 1953 to accommodate the growing water supply needs.

Across from the pumphouse, a low-lift pumping and water treatment building and a 1,000,000-gallon chlorination tank, both from 1993, stand. The brick treatment building has a shallow gable roof, while the reinforced concrete tank features a domed top. Further west, a 1932 house and five-bay garage, both with side-gable roofs, complete the complex. The house, a 1½-story structure, is built from rusticated concrete blocks and has three dormers.

The Falmouth Pumping Station remains essential to the town’s water system, combining historical significance with ongoing use.
