Teaticket School, Falmouth

The Teaticket School, located on Teaticket Highway in Falmouth, is a historic landmark that has played a central role in the town’s educational and civic history. Built in 1927, this Colonial Revival-style building was Falmouth’s first consolidated elementary school, marking a transition from smaller, scattered schoolhouses to a unified education system. In 1967, the building was repurposed to serve as the Administration Building for the Falmouth Public Schools, a role it continues to fulfill today. Recognizing its architectural and historical significance, the school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The Teaticket School occupies a triangular lot at the junction with Sandwich Road, an area historically significant as the former Teaticket Green, a town established in 1661. The T-shaped masonry building features classic Colonial Revival elements, including a side gable roof, corner quoining, and a grand central entrance portico. The entrance is highlighted by a fully pedimented and modillioned gable, a round clock face, and four round columns leading up from a raised platform. A multi-stage tower crowns the structure, consisting of a square base, an octagonal belfry with louvered sides, and a rounded cupola, a distinctive architectural feature in the townscape.

Designed by Haynes & Mason of Fitchburg, the Teaticket School replaced the town’s last one-room schoolhouse, which had stood adjacent to an earlier 1912 school building in Teaticket village. At the time of its construction, the only other large school in Falmouth was the 1919 junior high school building, later renamed the Hall School. The Teaticket School functioned not only as an elementary school but also as a community meeting space for four decades before its conversion into the school district’s administrative headquarters in 1967.

Today, the Teaticket School stands as a testament to Falmouth’s evolving educational landscape, preserving both historical charm and civic function within its enduring walls.
