Rapp Square and Monument to General Rapp, Colmar

Rapp Square and Monument to General Rapp, Colmar

Rapp Square (Place Rapp) is one of the most prominent public spaces in Colmar, offering a mix of historical significance and modern-day activity at the heart of the city. Originally laid out in the 19th century, the square is named after General Jean Rapp, a Colmar-born military officer who served under Napoleon Bonaparte. Flanked by tree-lined paths and bordered by elegant buildings, the square serves as both a civic gathering place and a focal point for seasonal events, including the popular Colmar Christmas Market and the summer fair.

At the centre of the square stands the imposing Monument to General Rapp, inaugurated in 1856. Sculpted by Auguste Bartholdi-also a Colmar native and best known for designing the Statue of Liberty-the bronze statue portrays Rapp in full military attire, symbolising his role in the Napoleonic Wars. The monument rests on a stone pedestal adorned with reliefs and inscriptions, commemorating his bravery and strategic contributions during key campaigns, particularly at Austerlitz and Essling.

Surrounding the monument is an open plaza that invites visitors to pause and reflect or simply enjoy the view of Colmar’s elegant urban landscape. During warmer months, sidewalk cafés spill into the square, making it a lively place to relax, people-watch, or take in a local concert or event. In contrast, winter transforms the square into a festive scene of lights, market stalls, and skating rinks. Whether for its historical resonance or cultural vibrancy, Rapp Square offers a well-rounded glimpse into Colmar’s civic spirit.
