Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square), Augsburg
Augsburg’s Town Hall Square sits right in the middle of the city, directly in front of the town hall. It’s a busy spot that hosts rallies, demonstrations, and various events throughout the year. Shaped roughly like a quarter circle and measuring about 80 by 80 meters, it’s surrounded by buildings on all sides. Notable landmarks include the Augsburg Town Hall and Perlach Tower on the east side and the city’s administration building, formerly a police station, to the south.
The Augustus Fountain sits in the northeast corner of the square. Locals and tourists alike gather here, especially since it’s a common starting point for city tours. Street cafes line the edges, drawing crowds on sunny days. Amenities like public toilets, phone booths, a kiosk, and a few shops, including a longstanding clothing store, are also present.
On August 8th, the square hosts the High Peace Festival, a public holiday in Augsburg. Around September 29th, the Turamichele festival, a hit with kids, takes place in front of the Perlach Tower. The square is also known for one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets, the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt, where the "Angel Play" on the town hall’s balcony attracts thousands of visitors on the four weekends of Advent.
