Rockway Gardens, Kitchener (must see)
Rockway Gardens was created in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Like many public projects of that time, it was designed to provide jobs while improving shared green space. The gardens were carefully planned with straight paths, stone retaining walls, and flower beds arranged in clear geometric shapes. Built on a gentle slope, the layout allows visitors to move easily from one level to another while seeing the plantings from different angles. Much of this original structure is still visible today.
One of the main features is the series of sunken garden terraces. These lower-level beds are bordered by short stone walls, so you can look down at the patterns from above. In spring, tulips and other bulbs create blocks of colour. By summer, the beds are filled with bright annual flowers arranged in new designs. The planting changes with the seasons, which means the gardens look different from April through early autumn.
A greenhouse stands on the property and supports the work done here. It produces many of the flowers used not only in the gardens but also in other public spaces across the region. This practical setup helps keep displays fresh and consistent each year.
The gardens are linked to Rockway Golf Course, which opened in 1933 and surrounds parts of the site. Open lawns and mature trees extend the sense of space beyond the formal beds. Benches placed along the paths offer simple places to sit and observe the layered terraces, patterned plantings, and steady rhythm of this historic landscape.
