Royal Tank Museum, Amman
The Royal Tank Museum is the first of its kind in the region, meeting international standards as a specialized tank museum. Spanning 20,000 square meters, it houses over 150 tanks, offering a family-friendly experience for both Jordanians and visitors. The museum's interactive storytelling exhibits allow guests to explore, learn, and appreciate the historical role of tanks and armored vehicles, particularly those used by the Jordanian Armed Forces in shaping modern Jordan amidst global conflicts.
The museum's mission is to collect, restore, preserve, and display military tanks and armored vehicles, enhancing public understanding of their impact. Aiming to be a leading regional and international institution, the museum aspires to excel in its collections, educational services, and technological applications, ultimately becoming a key repository of Jordanian military history.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a display of flags from various armored military units-some still active in the Jordanian Armed Forces, while others have been disbanded or merged. Prominently featured behind the flags is the Al Hussein tank, a main battle tank that served in the Jordanian military.
Human efforts to protect soldiers and cavalry date back to ancient times, with knights donning armor for protection-a concept even artists contributed to. This theme is explored further in the museum's dedicated hall on the origins of armoring.
Over a century has passed since the outbreak of World War I, which marked the first use of tanks in battle. This devastating conflict led to the reshaping of the world's map and the loss of over ten million lives, both military and civilian. The museum’s exhibits include tanks from the Allies and the Axis powers, showcasing their roles across the war's three main fronts: North Africa, Europe, and Russia.
