Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, Birmingham
Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a 1,038-acre green sanctuary in Birmingham's historic South East Lake neighborhood. Once home to bustling iron ore mines and stone quarries that fueled the local steel industry, the mountain has since traded industrial grime for scenic trails and thriving wildlife.
Today, it’s one of the largest privately held urban nature preserves in the U.S., offering over 14 miles (23 km) of hiking trails that wind through pine upland and hardwood forests, past abandoned quarries, and up to panoramic overlooks. It's a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone needing a break from concrete.
The on-site Nature Center-located on 81st Street South-houses native Alabama animals such as raptors, snakes, turtles, and owls. Many of these are permanent residents due to injuries, and they serve an educational purpose through exhibits and live programs. The center is open to visitors most days, except Mondays when it takes a well-earned rest.
Ruffner Mountain also offers environmental education programs, guided hikes, and seasonal camps for kids. Whether you’re into wildlife spotting, digging into local history, or need a quiet walk in the woods, Ruffner makes nature accessible without leaving the city.
