Sloss Furnaces, Birmingham

Sloss Furnaces, Birmingham (must see)

The Sloss Furnaces are part of the National Historic Landmark. These furnaces operated from 1881 to 1970 and provided jobs for many Birmingham residents. This site became a National Historic Landmark in 1981 and became open for tours in 1983. There are two 400-ton blast furnaces on the site that visitors can see, as well as forty buildings.

Visitors can see exhibits that highlight the role that metalwork once played in the local economy, as well as the lives of the mostly Black employees who worked at this complex. Boilers and engines that once powered the furnaces are available for visitors to see.

There are also regular events here that include metal art exhibitions and workshops related to metalwork. Depending on when you visit, you may be able to catch concerts or other events. The open-air setting creates an ideal location for all kinds of special events that offer something for everyone.
