Saint-Michel Chapel, Avignon

Saint-Michel Chapel, Avignon

The Saint-Michel Chapel is a historical gem with a fascinating past. Built between 1369 and 1378 by the same architect who designed the Saint-Martial Church, this chapel stands out with its unique pentagonal form, setting it apart from other Gothic churches in France. Dedicated to Archangel Michael, a figure revered in Christian, Hebrew, and Islamic traditions, the chapel originally sat next to the city's cemetery for the indigent, marking its significance in the community.

Interestingly, the name Saint-Michel Chapel is linked to another chapel dedicated to Saint Michael that once existed nearby but was destroyed in the 16th century. Despite the widespread destruction during the French Revolution and the establishment of a secular republic, the Saint-Michel Chapel survived, adding to its historical value.

Today, the chapel has been repurposed as an art gallery, showcasing the works of regional artists. Both the chapel and the surrounding square have undergone extensive renovations, preserving their historical charm while enhancing their beauty. As a well-maintained historical monument, the Saint-Michel Chapel continues to be a delightful spot for visitors, offering a blend of rich history and contemporary art in the heart of Avignon.
