Samuel B. Mumford House, Providence

Samuel B. Mumford House, Providence

This house, built in 1823 by local merchant Samuel B. Mumford (1791–1849) on College Street in Providence, is a classic example of Federal-style architecture. Its design includes characteristic elements such as a monitor-on-hip roof and an elegant entrance featuring Gothic colonnettes and an elongated semi-elliptical blind fanlight.

In 1959, the house was relocated to 65 Prospect Street to make way for Brown University's expansion. Despite the move, it retained its architectural integrity and continued to be used as a private residence.

The home is perhaps most famous for its association with the legendary horror writer H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937), who resided here from 1933 until his death. During this time, Lovecraft wrote several notable works, including his autobiography, “Some Notes on a Nonentity.” The house also served as inspiration for Robert Blake’s residence in Lovecraft’s story “The Haunter of the Dark.” Tragically, in early 1937, Lovecraft was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and passed away on March 15 of that year. Although no plaque marks its literary significance, the house remains a popular destination for fans exploring Lovecraft’s life and legacy in Providence.
