Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fuencisla, Segovia
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fuencisla is a Catholic church taht houses the patron saint of the city, the Virgen de la Fuencisla. Originally a small hermitage built in the 13th century, the sanctuary underwent expansions and renovations over time. In the late 16th century, a new building was constructed, attributed to Francisco de Mora and Pedro de Brizuela.
It was completed in 1613 and inaugurated by King Felipe III. The sanctuary underwent further enhancements in the 18th century. In recent years, restoration work was carried out, and it was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1982. The sanctuary is situated by the Eresma River, featuring a relatively plain exterior with a notable main entrance.
The interior has a quadrangular plan, a dome on pendentives, and an 18th-century altarpiece. The dressing room of the Virgin, designed by Pedro de la Torre, is a decorated, rock-carved space. In front of the sanctuary, a boulevard provides a recreational area for the people of Segovia.

Segovia Introduction Walking Tour
They say the aqueduct of Segovia was built by the Devil himself. Allegedly, a woman grew tired of carrying water uphill and turned to an unusual “architect” for help. The deal they struck was rather competitive: the Devil would claim her soul only if he completed the aqueduct before dawn. He failed, leaving a gap in the structure that remains to this day.
