Santa Kilim Gallery, Santa Fe

Santa Kilim is less a conventional art gallery than an eclectic textile and interior-design showroom. It specializes in handwoven kilims, rugs, and textiles that reflect Middle Eastern, North African, and Central and South Asian craftsmanship. Each piece is selected for its quality, design, and cultural character, offering visitors a window into weaving traditions passed down through generations.

The rugs are the principal attraction. Displays may include Turkish kilims, Afghan striped rugs, Moroccan carpets, Indo-Persian designs, Bessarabian rugs, runners, and colorful patchwork pieces. Some are flat-woven, with crisp geometric patterns visible on both sides, while others have a thicker pile and more elaborate floral decoration. Because the inventory continually changes, visitors may encounter both antique textiles and newer works produced using traditional methods.

The collection extends well beyond floor coverings. Santa Kilim also specializes in custom and antique doors, collected furniture, lighting, art, and unusual decorative objects. Carved wooden panels, weathered chests, lanterns, architectural fragments, and globally sourced furnishings are arranged alongside the textiles. The carved doors are a particular highlight, often featuring aged wood, metal fittings, and ornamental patterns that make them artworks in their own right.

Outside, rugs and found objects are often displayed against the property’s adobe walls and around its courtyard. Staff can explain regional weaving methods, materials, approximate ages, and the origins of particular rugs, helping visitors distinguish between kilims, pile carpets, and other textile traditions.
