Seminary Square Park, Bloomington

Seminary Square Park, Bloomington

Seminary Square Park holds significant historical and cultural importance in Bloomington, . Established in 1816 by an Act of Congress, it served as the original site of Indiana Seminary, which later evolved into Indiana University by 1838. The park's rich history is reflected in its origins as an educational institution and its subsequent transformation into a public green space. The first building on the site was constructed in 1824, and although Indiana University relocated to a new campus in 1883, the Old College building, erected in 1854, remained in use until it was tragically destroyed by fire in 1967.

Following the destruction of the Old College building, Seminary Square Park was officially established as a public park in 1975, preserving the site's historical legacy while providing a serene urban oasis for the community to enjoy. Designated as a historic landmark, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Among its notable features is a limestone arch dating back to the original Old College Building, serving as a tangible link to the park's educational past. In 2014, a significant renovation project was undertaken to enhance the park's amenities and accessibility, including the installation of lighting, a brick patio, a drinking fountain, and a stone retaining wall, along with the addition of park benches for visitors to relax and unwind.

One distinctive modern feature of Seminary Square Park is the striking 11-foot-tall steel sculpture located at the corner of South Walnut and West Second Streets. This unique artwork, known as "(C)olumn," serves as a testament to Bloomington's vibrant community and culture. Created through a collaborative effort involving members of the community, the sculpture incorporates words and phrases that capture the essence of Bloomington, as submitted by residents online.
