Serapeum, Alexandria

Serapeum, Alexandria

The Serapeum was a major Ptolemaic sanctuary dedicated to Serapis, a god created to bridge Greek and Egyptian traditions. Serapis blended Osiris and Apis with the form of a Greek god, reflecting the site’s mixed cultural world. Built on raised ground, the temple later became linked with a “daughter library” tied to the city’s scholarly tradition.

Today, little survives of the original sanctuary above ground, but the site remains important for what it reveals about religion, power, and urban life in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Pompey’s Pillar actually honoured Emperor Diocletian, not Pompey. Stories also claimed that light, hidden devices, or magnets made the Serapis statue seem alive.

The complex met a dramatic end in 391 AD, when conflict between pagan groups and Christians led to its destruction under the authority of Emperor Theodosius I and the local leadership of Theophilus. Accounts describe pagans barricading themselves inside before the temple was stormed, while the smashed Serapis statue came to symbolize paganism’s defeat. Today, the site preserves sphinxes, stone fragments, underground passages, and traces of animal burials.
