Simon Bolivar Park, Bogota

Simon Bolivar Park, Bogota

Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park, commonly known as Simon Bolivar Park, is the largest and most important urban park in Bogota. Spanning over 1,000 acres in the locality of Teusaquillo, this expansive green space serves as a recreational, cultural, and sports hub for the city. Managed by the District Institute of Recreation and Sport (IDRD), the park offers a much-needed retreat from the bustling urban landscape, featuring scenic walking paths, sports complexes, a public library, and the Bogota Botanical Gardens.

At the heart of the park lies a large lake where visitors can rent paddle boats, adding to its leisurely charm. One of its standout features is the massive events plaza, which can accommodate up to 140,000 people. Over the years, the park has become the epicenter of major citywide events, including the annual Summer Festival and Rock al Parque, Latin America’s largest free rock festival.

The park's transformation began in 1966, with the Eucharistic Temple built in 1968 for Pope Paul VI’s visit. Officially named in honor of Latin American liberator Simon Bolivar in 1979, it saw major upgrades in the 1980s under architect Arturo Robledo Ocampo, including landscaping, plazas, and water structures. The 1990s brought further improvements, such as expanded pathways and better lighting.

Simon Bolivar Park is not just a place for relaxation-it is a dynamic cultural landmark that brings together nature, history, and entertainment. Whether through its vast green landscapes, its historical significance, or its role as a venue for major concerts and festivals, the park remains an essential part of Bogota’s identity.
