Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel (Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue), Recife

Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel (Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue), Recife (must see)

Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel, or Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, is closely linked to one of the earliest chapters of Jewish history in the Americas. Its name means “Rock of Israel,” and it is associated with the Sephardic Jewish community that settled in this part of Brazil during the period of Dutch rule in the 17th century.

The original synagogue functioned during the Dutch occupation of Pernambuco, especially in the 1630s and 1640s, when religious tolerance allowed Jewish life to develop more openly. Many members were Sephardic Jews with roots in Portugal and Spain. After the Portuguese reconquest in 1654, some left for New Amsterdam, where they helped establish the first Jewish congregation in what became New York.

Today, the restored building operates as a cultural and historical centre rather than an active synagogue. The most revealing part of the museum is the mikveh, or ritual bath. During archaeological excavations in 2001, it was found deep beneath several layers of flooring. Because the bath was fed by a natural freshwater spring, as required by Jewish law, its discovery helped confirm that this building had indeed served as the synagogue, rather than as an ordinary house.

Visitors will find exhibitions on Sephardic migration, Dutch Brazil, religious tolerance, persecution, and the Atlantic trade networks that shaped the region. The site is modest in scale but rich in context, offering a focused look at how Jewish history, colonial politics, and urban life intersected in early modern Brazil. Its value lies in the layered story it tells about movement, identity, faith, and survival.
