Sloman House, Hamburg

Sloman House, Hamburg

Sloman House, located in Hamburg, is a prominent office building with significant architectural and historical value. Constructed between 1908 and 1910 on Baumwall, the building was designed by architects Martin Haller and Hermann Geißler for the Rob. M. Sloman Shipping Company. An expansion in 1921/1922, overseen by architect Fritz Höger, added a wing to the original structure at Steinhöft, introduced two staggered stories, and another wing facing Herrengrabenfleet. Höger's design had to match the existing façade on Steinhöft but allowed for experimentation with expressionist forms in the interiors and on the Canal wing. These design elements were precursors to those used in the famous Chile House (Chilehaus), influencing the style of 1920s Kontorhaus architecture in Hamburg.

By 2003, Sloman House underwent extensive renovations to transform it into a modern office complex, offering 11,000 square meters of office space. Notably, it houses one of Hamburg's oldest operational paternoster elevators, installed in 1921.

The building's location is strategic, with entrances on Baumwall and Steinhöft, directly adjacent to the Baumwall underground station and facing the Kehrwiederspitze across the Speicherstadt. In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, Sloman House was listed under monument protection in 2000.

The building also played a cultural role, hosting the Marebuchverlag, a publishing subsidiary, until September 2008. Additionally, Sloman House has appeared in the ZDF television series "Notruf Hafenkante", showcasing its exterior in the show. Today, Sloman House remains a vital landmark and an integral part of Hamburg’s architectural heritage, continuing to serve as a bustling office complex.
