Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Boston

Dedicated in 1877, this colossal monument stands proudly atop Flagstaff Hill, which happens to be the highest point within the Boston Common. Rising to a height of 126 feet, with a circumference of 38 square feet, its purpose is to honor the valiant soldiers and sailors who lost their lives in the Civil War. Designed in the Neo-Classical architectural style, it is adorned with four bronze bas-relief plaques depicting significant scenes from the Civil War: "The Departure for the War" illustrates a regiment marching in front of the Massachusetts State House, "The Sanitary Commission" depicts medical care on the battlefield, another plaque showcases a battle between Union Sailors and the CSS Virginia, while the fourth one captures the poignant moment of soldiers returning from the war.

Crowning the monument are four statues, each symbolizing a different theme: Peace, represented by a female figure gazing southward; the Sailor, a seaman looking out toward the ocean; History, portrayed as a Greek figure with her gaze directed toward the heavens; and the Soldier, an infantryman standing at ease.

At the pinnacle stands the emblematic figure of Lady Liberty, adorned with a crown featuring 13 stars. She clutches a sword and a laurel leaf in her right hand, while her left hand holds the United States flag. Surrounding her feet are four stone eagles, the national bird and a symbol of the U.S.A.
