St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, Wichita
Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church-originally founded in 1886 as Saint Boniface Parish-stands as the city’s oldest Catholic church. Established by German immigrant families seeking Mass in their native language, the parish’s brick exterior and ornate steeple were built between 1902 and 1905, and reflect a captivating blend of Neo-Gothic form with Baroque and Georgian stylistic flourishes.
Step inside to be greeted by richly decorated interiors dating from 1909 and carefully restored in 2005. The sanctuary features stained-glass windows-crafted in Germany with now-rare kiln-fired pigments and imported piecemeal-which remain irreplaceable relics of turn-of-the-century artistry. Beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling, the high altar and side shrines showcase vivid murals and statues of saints.
Beyond its architectural allure, Saint Anthony remains a living, multicultural parish. Originally serving German-speaking Catholics, it now welcomes both English- and Vietnamese-speaking congregations. Visitors can also appreciate the church’s historic 1886 Hinners pipe organ-Wichita’s oldest functioning organ.
