St. George Village Botanical Garden, Frederiksted

St. George Village Botanical Garden, Frederiksted (must see)

St. George Village Botanical Garden offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical depth, spread across 16 acres just outside Frederiksted. The garden is set within the ruins and restored structures of an 18th- and 19th-century Danish colonial sugarcane plantation, creating a setting where lush plant life grows alongside stone walls, former workers’ cottages, and estate buildings. This layered landscape allows visitors to experience St. Croix’s botanical richness in direct dialogue with its past.

The garden contains the most comprehensive plant collection in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with more than 1,500 native and pan-tropical species and varieties. These are organized into distinct areas, including heritage gardens, a native arboretum, orchid and bromeliad collections, cactus and succulent gardens, ornamental ferns, a dry palmetum, an irrigated rainforest section, and conservation gardens. The garden’s mission focuses on conservation, particularly of native and threatened species, as well as on preserving St. Croix’s ethnobotanical traditions.

Education is central to the site’s purpose. The garden includes a registered herbarium with over 6,000 preserved plant specimens, representing roughly 80 percent of the plant species found in the Virgin Islands. A small research library and herbarium are housed in a restored post-emancipation workers’ cottage, reinforcing the connection between scientific study and social history.

The St. George Village Museum, located in another restored plantation building, adds further historical context. Exhibits trace over 2,000 years of human presence on the site, from Amerindian settlers as early as 100 A.D. to the Danish colonial sugar era. Artifacts related to sugar production, daily life, and early settlement help visitors understand how landscape, labor, and culture shaped St. Croix, making the garden both a place of reflection and discovery.
